Terms of Service

The short version. Alex is a free, invite only beta. It sends emails and books meetings on your behalf without asking you first, which is the whole point of it, so you are responsible for what it arranges in your name. It will get things wrong sometimes. Watch the copies it sends you.
Use it for scheduling your own meetings. Do not use it to send bulk mail or to bother people. We can end the beta or your access to it at any time.
1. These terms
These terms are between you and Balint Bertok, an individual rather than a company ("we", "us"). Alex is a personal project. By signing up for or using Alex, you accept them. If you are using Alex for your employer, you are confirming you are allowed to agree to these terms on their behalf.
2. What the service is
Alex is an assistant with its own email address. You copy it into an email thread and ask it to arrange a meeting. It reads that thread, looks at whether you are free, emails the other people to agree a time, and puts the meeting in your calendar. It can also hold time for you on your own calendar.
Alex is software, not a person, and it says so to anyone who asks it.
The service is currently an invite only beta. It is free, it is incomplete, and parts of it will change or stop working while we build it.
3. What you need
You need a Google account whose calendar you can connect, and an invite code. The people you are scheduling with need nothing at all: to them Alex is an address on the thread.
You are responsible for keeping access to your own email account secure. Anyone who can send email as you can instruct Alex as you.
4. Alex acts on its own, and that is the deal
This is the most important thing on this page. Alex does not show you a draft and wait for approval. It sends emails to the people on your threads, and it creates, moves and cancels calendar entries, without checking with you first. A delay for approval would defeat the point of it.
What follows from that:
- You are responsible for the meetings Alex arranges in your name and for the emails it sends on your behalf, as if you had sent them yourself.
- You get a copy of every message Alex sends. Read them. If something is wrong, reply and Alex will correct it.
- Only copy Alex into threads where you are content for it to reply to everyone on them.
Alex will sometimes be wrong. It may misread a request, offer a time that does not suit, or book something you did not want. Where that matters, check its work.
5. How you may use it
Use Alex to arrange your own meetings. You may not:
- Use it to send bulk, marketing or unsolicited email, or anything that breaks anti-spam law.
- Use it to harass, deceive or impersonate anyone.
- Copy it into threads whose contents you are not entitled to share with a third party service.
- Try to break, overload or reverse engineer it, or work around its limits and safeguards.
- Resell it or run it on behalf of somebody else's business.
If you break these, we may suspend or remove your access without notice.
6. Your data
What we collect and what we do with it is set out in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms. In short, Alex reads only the threads you copy it on, sees only whether hours on your calendar are free or busy, and does not store the text of your emails.
You keep ownership of everything you send. You give us permission to process it only so far as we need to in order to run the service for you.
7. Availability
We will try to keep Alex running and we do not promise that we will. It is a beta on a single server. There is no uptime commitment, no support commitment, and no guarantee that email will be delivered or that a meeting will be booked in time to be useful.
Email is not instant. Alex works in minutes rather than seconds, and depends on other people's mail servers behaving.
8. Ending it
You can stop using Alex whenever you like. Disconnect it at your Google account permissions and ask us to delete your data.
We can suspend or end your access, or end the beta entirely, at any time. If we close the service we will give you reasonable notice by email where we can. Since the beta is free, no refund arises.
9. No warranty
Alex is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, timely, secure or error free, or that the times it proposes and books will be correct.
10. Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profits, business, goodwill or opportunity, or for any meeting that was booked wrongly, booked late, or never booked at all.
Where we are liable, our total liability to you is limited to £100, which reflects that the service is provided free of charge.
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.
11. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms as the service changes. We will update the date at the top, and email you before a significant change takes effect. Carrying on using Alex after that means you accept the new terms.
12. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, except that if you are a consumer you may bring proceedings in the country where you live.
